Il Corzanello Rosato is comprised of 100% Sangiovese, grown in vineyards dedicated to the production of rosé. Half of the harvest was picked slightly underripe in the first week of September, and half was picked later, at the end of the month, when the grapes were fully ripe. The first harvest provided fresh berry acidity and delicacy of aromatics, and the second provided the wine’s body and concentration. The grapes were whole cluster pressed, and the wine fermented in thermoregulated stainless steel tanks, where it matured for four months on the fine lees before it was bottled in March. In the glass, the Rosato has a glowing, limpid, salmon pink color, with flashes of polished copper just at the edge. Aromas of freshly cut peonies, white cranberries, tamarind, and Italian parsley move in and out of the foreground (not too, too cold, please), with suggestions of wild strawberries, sumo citrus, rhubarb and pink peppercorns emerging as the nose develops in the glass. On the palate the wine is sapid and vibrant, with multiple layers of mineral-infused red berry flavors that echo the nose, along with discreet impressions of coriander seed, nutmeg, fresh green perilla, and thyme; everything shot through with vibrant red berry acidity and pink sea-salt minerality.
About this wine producer: When Swiss architect Wendel Gelpke bought Corzano in the early 1970s, he promised the Marchese Ippolito Niccolini that his run-down seventy-hectare estate would remain intact forever. He made the same covenant with the Marchesa Rangoni-Machiavelli when he bought her Fattoria di Paterno. Together, they form a 140-hectare estate that produces some of the finest olive oil, sheep’s milk cheeses, and wine in all of Tuscany. A member of Wendel Gelpke’s family manages every activity, including the holiday rental of the beautifully restored farmhouses and apartments. Aljoscha Goldschmidt, the managing agronomist and winemaker, is Wendel Gelpke’s nephew. If you ever meet “Joschi,” you are as likely to be charmed by his musical, Dutch-accented English as by his irresistible wines.
