Produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes, this wine is aged for 4 months in “botti grandi.” In the glass, the wine is an intense ruby red color, while the nose evolves with aromas of red cherry, blackberry, violets, and hints of tobacco.
On the palate, the wine is bright and fresh, with fruit flavors that echo the nose.
About this wine producer: In 1979, Fabio Pellegrini purchased roughly 5 hectares (12 acres) of vines on a northwest-facing Montalcino hillside at 1,300 feet above sea level. This elevation and cooling breezes from the north lead to a mild microclimate, which promotes optimal ripening of healthy grapes. Planted in hard, limestone and clay soils, the vines are 100% Sangiovese Grosso, a clone of the Sangiovese grape variety that is also known as “Brunello.”
Today, the estate is overseen by the current generation, Elena Pellegrini, and the philosophy of the estate is to produce wines in the traditional style of the Montalcino region, which express the terror of their vineyards. The farming is sustainable and the grapes are hand-harvested, before rigorous sorting. After fermentation, the wines are aged in large Slavonian oak “botti grandi,” the traditional aging method for Brunello di Montalcino.
