The grapes are hand-harvested with careful attention plot by plot, selecting for those with optimal maturity. Vinification is in concrete vats with aging in Slavonian and French oak for an average of 12 months before bottling. Production is quite small, fewer than 3,500 cases on average.
About this wine producer: Poggerino is located in Radda, a sub-zone of Chianti Classico which is surrounded by forest, and combined with its high elevation, is relatively cool, providing a perfect home for Sangiovese which benefits from the longer hang time the area provides. The estate has passed down through multiple generations of the Conti family, and is currently headed by Piero Lanza, grandson of the last Prince Conti. The twelve hectare of densely-planted vines are farmed organically in the rocky, “galestro” soils. Piero embarked on a replanting of the vineyards in 1994 using clones best suited for the high altitudes and the vines are now between 15-25 years old.
