First, what not to expect: there is no theatre popcorn butter. No overripe papaya or cotton candy. The Benoni “Petits Grains” San Luis Obispo Chardonnay was produced entirely from Chardonnay grapes grown in SIP® Certified vineyards in the San Luis Obispo Coast region, vinified in a mix of stainless steel and neutral French Oak barrels. In the glass, this brilliant, polished white gold Chardonnay gradually unfurls with penetrating aromas of juicy Cortland apples, white peaches, kaffir lime, and lemon blossoms, all discreetly seasoned with fleeting suggestions of nutmeg, chamomile, toasted wheat, and fresh cream. On the palate, the wine is layered and dense, with a solid, shimmering core of mineral-infused Chardonnay flavors that echo the nose, reined in by dry, almost Riesling-like sea-spray minerality, and comes on strongest after about fifteen minutes, not too chilled, in a large, well-shaped Burgundy glass. Like a Corsin Saint-Véran that was amplified by the Central Coast sun.
About this wine producer: We're not permitted to identify the winery where this beautiful Chardonnay was made. But we are authorized to tell you that the wine was grown and estate-bottled by one of San Luis Obispo County’s leading producers.
